Your gut is talking to you. Here's how to listen.

Most people only think about their gut when something goes wrong. But your gut is doing a lot more than digesting your lunch. It influences your energy, your bowel habits, your comfort and even how you respond to stress. Getting to know what's normal for you is often the first step in noticing when something's off.

The billions of bacteria living in your gut respond to your overall eating habits over time, not just to any single meal. More variety, more plants and a bit of consistency goes a long way. Think a mix of vegetables across the week, fibre introduced gradually and foods like yoghurt or sauerkraut if they suit you. Your gut doesn't need perfection - it just needs you to show up most of the time.

What surprises a lot of people is how much stress affects digestion. Your gut and brain are in constant two-way conversation. When you're stressed or rushing, your digestion feels it - which is why bloating or discomfort often flares during busy periods, even when you haven't changed what you're eating.

Small habits can make a real difference here. Slowing down at meals helps more than people expect. Sitting down, putting your phone away, and taking a breath before you eat gives your body a chance to actually digest properly.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Most gut symptoms are not cancer - but changes that stick around deserve attention. If you notice a change in your bowel habits lasting more than two weeks, blood in your stool or anything that feels unusual for you, see your GP.

Supporting your gut doesn't have to be complicated. A bit of steadiness and a few small habits go further than any overhaul.
